The airline’s website said that it was “experiencing issues with our IT systems,” and that it was “working to resolve the issues.” The reason for the ground stop was not immediately clear, but was requested by the airline, the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center page showed. There was a medium probability of the ground stop being extended. Both the FAA and Alaska Air could not be immediately reached for comment outside business hours. Social media posts also showed users noting that the airline’s mobile application was down, although this could not be immediately verified. A ground stop order indicates that flights of the affected airline are temporarily prevented from taking off. They can be issued in the event of emergencies such as extreme weather, system outages, or even air traffic congestion.
