Kira sighed, "Iberto, stop toying with the kid." Iberto chuckled. "My apologies, I am what I am." He shrugged. "There is someone who would like to meet you if you are willing. His name is Asher." The monk narrowed his eyes. "I don't know anyone by that name." "I know," Iberto said, suddenly somber. "Few do. That is why he wishes to meet you." Kira is suddenly looking back and forth between Iberto and the monk, speculation in her eyes. Kira "Iberto...?" "It is your decision, holy one, but I think you would find a conversation with him… enlightening." Iberto's nod was as much to confirm Kira's speculation as to emphasize his point. "Who, Iberto?" Kira asked. "I don't know that name either." Iberto shrugged. He wouldn’t force the monk to go, but he would make it clear that the matter would not be open long. "The Chancemaker. He fades, holy one, and you will not get another opportunity. So you gamble no matter what you choose. To risk knowing, or to always wonder." Conflicted emotions contorted the monk's features. "The Chancemaker. I have only seen that title in old stories." He nods. "Perhaps it would be better to risk knowing..."

I had the funny thought that Iberto becomes hypercompetent and nearly deadly when he takes off his goggles. And they become a bandana. Much like... a Snake. Ibi Snake.

Santosh, called of Ertu of the Fields, approached the small altar room dedicated to Asher the Chancemaker cautiously. He brought with him a bundle that the Hunt-Called had offered him. “I had meant to try to give it to him later today,” Iberto had said, “but if you go to him now, better you bring it.” The man had flashed a wry grin. “For all I know, he will throw away anything from me immediately, and that would be a waste of a hunt, short though it was.” Santosh smiled at the memory. Iberto was young yet, both in age and in his service to the goddes. He carried with him the brash confidence of youth, a certainty that he knew what must be done which had carried him far. But having spoken with him now, Santosh could see cracks in the young Called's confidence. Getting to know Iberto, he decided, would be one of his priorities in the next weeks. But that was for later.

Kira thought Iberto trapped her forever when he brought her to the temple.
"Come," Iberto said, stepping off the Temple grounds. "But..." Kira said, staring at him. "I thought..." Iberto smiled, a gentle look she would not have thought him capable of, "The monks would have us believe we are trapped here, but we are not. You know already that I leave for my hunts. Even more than I, you cannot be captured or held, Sun-Called." "We can leave?" She stepped off the Temple grounds as well. "All of us can. Hannu, Called of the Green, even now ministers to the far shrines and temples. And," Iberto paused, "Those who have friends or family are not meant to be cut off from them." She turned to stare at him, tears shining in her eyes. "I can go back?" "Of course. I never meant for you to think you couldn't." He gestured out towards the city. "Go. Tell them what has happened." Her slight scowl became a bright smile. "I do not know if this is full payment, but it helps. Thank you." She turned and dashed out of the compound toward the city.

FUNERARY INSCRIPTION OF A. CORNELIUS PRISCUS, 50-100 CE. BATHS OF DIOCLETIAN A(ulus) Cornelius A(uli) libertus) / Priscus, sagarius / de horreis Galbianis, / v(ivus) f(ecit) sibi et / Corneliae Dextri libert(ae) / Erotidi coniugi suae et / A(ulo) Cornelio A(uli) I(iberto) Romano / conliberto suo et /A(ulo) Cornelio A(uli) l(iberto) Corintho / liberto suo et / ceteris libertis / libertabusque omnibus / suis posterisque eorum. This tomb marker was found in 1898 during drain works near S. Paolo fuori le Mura, and hence probably came from the large necropolis of the via Ostiensis. It commemorates the freedman Aulus Cornelius Priscus, who, while living, had a tomb built for himself, his sexily-named wife Cornelia Erotis, his fellow freedman A. Cornelius Romanus, his own freedman A. Cornelius Corinthus, all his other freedmen and freedwomen, and their descendants. Freed slave solidarity! But the most interesting part of the inscription is where Priscus is described as a "sagarius de horreis Galbianis", a wool cloak (sagum) maker in the Horrea Galbiana, a warehouse/market built between the river and the Aventine cliffs by an ancestor of the short-lived emperor Galba. He must have made a lot of money to have built a tomb large enough to hold everyone he names. They were plausibly his co-workers.
