It’s painfully cold here today, which has me reminiscing about a photo essay I shot for @outsidemag.bsky.social on iceboat racing. Its competitors are a rare breed and the sport itself is facing headwinds that threaten its future — climate change.

Sir Edmund Fuchs scuppered my mother's research career as a botanist by denying her the right to go on the Antarctic expedition because she was (gasp) an unmarried woman. The doctor's wife was going, but that was OK, because marriage is magic. So fuch him and the iceboat he sailed here on.

Until the Stanley Steamer, sailboats on ice runners were by far the fastest vehicles on earth. They were once used to carry mail on the Hudson river. Modern ones easily hit 60 mph in a 25 mph wind.
