I can tell you stories of Jenn-Aire and failed plastic tubing for icemakers that will destroy a house in a matter of one week. (Watched one do $150K in damage that no one could see happening because it was all running down the inside of the sheetrock and under the wood flooring)

The #1 reason IMHO: the icemakers sanded the running surface of the rocks on Friday (a routine thing that happens in events like this, but it really changes how the rocks run) and USA has struggled to adjust. All their misses have been wide/heavy

Icemakers are an absolute necessity for me, but I don’t ever want a *dispenser*. That keeps me in a very narrow price range with a narrow set of features and size, for better or worse.

Friends don't let friends do in-fridge icemakers.
That said, we have a freestanding little one we use maybe 1-2x a month that has been troublefree (just a little noisy).

Gave up on having icemakers in our fridge freezer compartment. Usually only lasted a year or less before breaking, and cost over a hundred each time to repair.
I can swap a lot of ice cube trays in and out to save that much money, and save cubes in Ziplocs if I'm going to need a bunch.
