In honor of #BlueBugs and #BlueMonday here is an undescribed species of Coelichneumon from Costa Rica and several blue North American ichneumonines on ichsofna.org

Ichneumonids have a bad reputation for being hard to ID because there are so many species. I'm trying to change that so on ichsofna.org I've got an image classification model to identify subfamilies and a filterable gallery for Ichneumoninae species (shown below).

It's easy to forget that not all readers will immediately remember the approximate size range of subfamily Eucerotinae. It's not like Ichneumoninae or Rhyssinae which everyone knows.

There is a lot of functionality on IoNA (ichsofna.org) that most people aren´t aware of. Here are a couple of videos explaining what can be done with the filterable galleries.

Four lovely ichneumons (all in subfamily Ichneumoninae) recently encountered in our Worcester garden 💚🍃

To quote @gavinbroad.bsky.social 'Maybe a species of Coelichneumon but I can't see any relevant bits. Definitely subfamily Ichneumoninae'.

Cratichneumon permagnus (= very great Cratichneumon). A new species described by Claridge et al. last fall along with 10 other Cratichneumon species from Arizona.

Eparces australis (Ichneumoninae) - described by myself and Davide dal Pos (@ddpichenumonidae.bsky.social) last year. No one has yet to figure out the host of any Eparces species, but they're probably some micro moth feeding on a semi-aquatic plant. Someone should try and rear it out. #Ichneumonidae

Well this sample didn't take long to sort. 🧪

Tog inte länge att sortera det här. Alla brokparasitsteklar i mus.utu.fi/ZMUT.7427

The Ichneumon-flies USNMB books are available as pdfs online and are pretty approachable for both generic and species keys. They don't cover all or even most of the subfamilies though. For Ichneumoninae Gerd Heinrich has a series of papers treating the northeastern fauna.

Phygadeuontinae / Cryptinae / Ateleutinae är när jag brukar ge upp 🙂 Antar att skulle det gå, men för tillfället orkar och hinner jag inte. Men de är ändå bättre än tropiska Ichneumoninae.

This next sample is more like it! None of the namby pamby "dozen or so wasps" here!

Thank you! We would like to work on it next. We tried to focus on the "smallest" subfamily first (I am tackling Ichneumoninae, but that's just me). We are done with them and we are movign to the medium one (which Rhyssinae is in). I will start with that right away. Unless, you want to help us! :-)

Yay, video 🥳 Have a wasp from Ugandan forest! Anyone know if the sounds are from birds or frogs?

Videon kunniaksi ugandalainen pistiäinen 🥳 Kihoahmanen (Ichneumoninae), koiras, siipirikko.

Jag är nu en Bluesky-användare av videoklass 🥳 Törstig stekel från Ugandas skog.

Tunnen suomalaiset lajit hävettävän huonosti, mutta kyllä Achaius oratoriukselta minusta näyttää! Haluatko @ilarisaaksjarvi.bsky.social vahvistaa? (on Ichneumoninae, mutta tunnistettava väritys)

This is fantastic!
I especially like your subfamily identifier.
Do you plan to do the same for the non-Ichneumoninae subfamilies?
