the first time as a young biologist I heard an ichthyologist say "fishes" and I was like WHAT is going on around here

I remember being in first grade and going around the circle saying what you wanted to be growing up. That poor teacher when I said ichthyologist and then spelled it for her.

But is all this true? Certainly, the legends go back a while. In 1930, ichthyologist Eugene Willis Gudger wrote articles for the American Journal of Surgery about this creature which “...has the habit of entering with great impetuosity and rapidity into the external openings of the human body...”

Meet the friendly folks in Pointer Fishing!
Parker, the Chef.
Matty, the Collector.
Sarah, the Radiobiologist (Study of radioactive effects on living things).
Sebastian, the Ichthyologist (Study of fish)

They need your help finding specific fish, and will give special rewards if you do.

And then the advice she gets from the AI is that putting a fish-sized couch in the tank will help the fish feel more calm! I'm no ichthyologist, but I have serious doubts about that.

Have you ever watched a movie with an Ichthyologist listed in the credits, right underneath Locations? Me neither. That is until I watched Russ Meyers’ Up!

I think an ichthyologist might challenge you on the typical depth for a clownfish.

Earlier on Istiklal Street, Cuneyt, an ichthyologist disguised as a fishmonger educated me in halting English of the six different names for Bosphorus bluefish in order of size. They sounded like some magical incantation: küçük, çinekop, sarikanat, lüfer, kofana, sirtukara. Here he holds up a lüfer.

Sometimes when I’m having my balcony-away-from-my-household time I’ll read the wiki page for a mountain or a desert, etc. Started on the Congo River today bc why not. Ended up on an article about a fish so pale its local nickname translates to White Man In an Office.

Attendance at the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologist and Herpetologists has been hurt by the ignorant policies. This year in New Orleans wasn't as hard hit as last year in St. Paul. Next year will be Panama in a hotel complex at the southern end of the canal in the former Zone. Hopefully people return.

Ichthyologist Margaret Mary Smith was born 110 years ago today! Together with her husband James she discovered some 350 species of South African fish and wrote some 500 papers, as well as producing over 2000 illustrations, with their 1945 book "The Sea Fishes of Southern Africa" containing 685. 🐟🧪

Oh I wrote a mail to an german ichthyologist who inspired me in my teenager years to study freshwater fishs when I'm an adult. Sadly for some pretty stupid reasons it never worked out for me but maybe an Interview with him would be nice for the blog.

Listened to the new Behind the Bastards by @iwriteok.bsky.social and I'm reminded of the book Why Fish Don't Exist by @lutimestwo.bsky.social, about ichthyologist and eugenicist David Starr Jordan, who after discovering a happy village of disabled people realized that it must be destroyed.

But back to this fish note - which is fine, I guess, I'm not an ichthyologist - and neither is he, given that he lists his affiliation as "Department of Entomology".

(that's arthropods: insects, arachnids, millipedes, etc. That institution has a department of marine invertebrates. He is not in it.)

Ichthyologist Yseult le Danois was born 106 years ago today. Her nuanced work on classifying fish by relations of their bone and muscular structures became accepted practice in 1974. There aren't pictures of her online, but here's one of her favorites, the frogfish!

Sort of disappointed no feminist ichthyologist has blessed us with a bicycle fish yet.

Wait...is that the actual bug ("Do I look like I'm some kinda ichthyologist?") or is it a carapace that's been shed?
