Chrysis ignita?🤔

Very pleased to spot these mason wasps in cop this week in my Suffolk garden, also seen singly; I believe they are Ancistrocerus nigricornis. Lurking all the while was a ruby-tailed wasp, probably Chrysis ignita.

She chuckles softly and sits down next to him, pulling Ignita off him and into what little lap she currently has. "Can I bring you some soup?"

"Anata?" She walks slowly into the room, one hand on her lower back. "Oh. Oh dear. You are rather unwell, aren't you?" she says as Ignita chirps from on top of her husband and a pile of other critters.

To facilitate this life of crime, the stinger has been modified into an egg injector or ovipositor (shown) that deposits eggs in the nests of other wasps.

Around the ovipositor are jagged projections that can cut through mud or paper walls, called "anal teeth".😬

Here's a more classical view. The "ruby-tail" part is obvious, but why call a wasp "cuckoo"?

These are stingless wasps that are both parasitoid & kleptoparasites.

Meaning their larvae are laid in other wasps' nests & eat the larva of the host species & they also /steal food/.

What exactly are you looking at here? Beside artwork by Paul Kämpf?

The answer is going to a take a bit of unpacking, but it's a ruby-tailed cuckoo wasp, Chrysis ignita.

Let's start by looking at it from another angle...

Stanhopea frymirei ‘Hermitage Ignita’ won an Award of Merit from the RHS Orchid Expert Group on Saturday. The flowers of this genus only last a day or so but a mature plant can have successive spikes to enjoy 🌿

Ruby-tailed Wasp (Chrysis ignita group) from Victoria Park, Dundee way back on the 10th of June. Only just getting to the editing of the bulk of the photos from that day. There's only another 13000+ to get through after I get through that day's pics, mostly insects too! #UKwildlife

Bornean Crested Fireback

The Bornean crested fireback, Lophura ignita, is a large, sexually dimorphic, and distinctly-coloured pheasant of the family Galliformes endemic to the rainforests of Borneo and the surrounding islands. It is a non-migrating omnivorous species,

On the woodpile in the Coronation Meadow which is part of the Greenway Estate NT. South Devon. A stunning little cuckoo wasp in the Chrysis ignita group. This can only be pinned down further by microscopic examination. Parasitoid of Ancistrocerus wasps.

This is possibly a Chrysis ignita, a species of Cuckoo Wasp but difficult to separate species. The group is referred to as Ruby-tailed Wasps...
