#ImportMaps
Importmaps… gotta love them

got oauth with bluesky to work with @mary.my.id's github.com/mary-ext/atc... library! everything worked the way it said it should

here is a super basic example app I made that just logs in and shows you 5 people you follow github.com/jvns/bsky-oa..., just needed to fiddle with importmaps a bit

OK Am I just stupid or are really import maps always inlines although they are formatted as JSON rather than JavaScript objects?

Tell me if this is a stupid idea or not:

oh, no... vite based, but integrated into our own build system that spits out importmaps (sourced from vite's manifest). if that's missing, every asset is missing. but to be clear, vite was not even part of the problem.

Finally got my website updated for Rails + Importmaps + Tailwind 4 tonight.

~2 hours to do what I put off for months

Rails frontend story is fundamentally weak in that it is not _convenient_:

1. No one else is using importmaps so trying to use RANDOM_LIB may or may not be plugnplay
2. You're not in the world's largest frontend ecosystem so you can't use off the shelf design components

I haven't run into that in a few years thanks to importmaps and my steering clear of pulling JS dependencies into projects.

The asset pipeline has been a nightmare since Rails ditched Sprockets as the One Way. importmaps and Propshaft is better, but its still really confusing.

also curious if anyone knows the answers to my questions in the post, like

- is there a simple way to convert a CommonJS module into an ES module on my computer? (the way esm.js does)
- Is there a tool that automatically generates importmaps for an ES Module that I have downloaded locally?
November 18, 2024 at 4:28 PM
same! I'm more than happy to implement now and then sit on my ass while these (continue) to come to fruition:

- http imports / importmaps
- css / json modules
- URLPattern
- web components
- css nesting
- relative color syntax

And don't forget:

- HTML INCLUDES?!?!?

Someone out there had a "precompiling NPM dependencies with esbuild and using importmaps for your regular app files" and now i can't find it.
January 27, 2025 at 5:01 AM
Oh interesting, they actually added an NPM specific lexxy with dedupeable modules, which acknowledges the problem in rails-importmaps
rhino is ~20kb smaller than Lexxy, and its dedupeable with your existing dependencies, so its got that going for it

I love using @esm.sh for browser importmaps!

- Handles npm, jsr and GitHub registries
- Checks the User-Agent to serve the right ES version (es2022, etc) – no bloat!
- Supports tree-shaking, so you can import just what you need

Gave importmaps a try, but switched back to esbuild. Too much friction to get basic libraries like @daisyui.bsky.social to work with importmaps. I'll try again in a year or two.

You still have to learn and understand the Rails configuration/DSL for importmaps. And TBH, esbuild is easier to understand and learn + more generally useful outside Rails (at least for me it is)

In poking around at the source, it looks like you won't be able to use custom extensions with importmaps. You're locked in to what they give you.

github.com/basecamp/lex...

They mark all the `@lexical/*` extensions as "devDependencies", so they won't get deduped by your importmaps.
I wonder how adding extra extensions will work with importmaps 🤔

Cool that you can now use TipTap, Lexical, or Trix with ActionText

Have you tried JSPM Generator yet?

It is a great tool for generating importmaps that you can paste into your HTML file, so that your JavaScript modules can import libraries.

It currently lets you choose from 4 module sources: jspm.io, esm.sh, unpkg.com, and cdn.jsdelivr.net.

Mini-TIL with Rails-importmaps.

It works *significantly* better with multi-package libraries instead of multi-entrypoint libraries.

// my-lib/index.js
import { foo } from "./foo.js"
foo()

^ this shit is gonna blow up.

// my-lib/index.js
import { foo } from "@my-lib"
foo()

^ perfect.

* For logistical reasons (and to support the typescript and the react part of the book), it doesn't use import maps in the main part of the book (it does cover them in an appendix).

If I were to do it again, I'd start with importmaps, and not use TypeScript for the Stimulus controllers...
January 17, 2025 at 4:30 PM
I tried importmaps for all of 5 seconds and then moved over to esbuild
November 27, 2024 at 3:43 PM
Importmaps are anything but simple. Simple is put JavaScript in this folder, it works.
November 27, 2024 at 1:09 PM
Look ma' no esbuild, no cdn, and somewhat editor tooling support! (you wouldn't believe how much the tooling "just works" when your dependencies are stored in a "node_modules" directory)

Start a new Rails 8 project. Use importmaps. Everything works.

Decide to try vite-rails, because its apparently the cool thing to do. Follow the installation instructions. Nothing works.

That's the JS ecosystem for ya 🤷
