Today’s lesson: try my first imprimatura. Still using the reference image from the last painting (though I did some B&W shade value tests yesterday too). This was interesting, and it really helps me get an understanding for how reversible the paint can be.

Loxodonta Africana (African Elephant) a Vigilante Matriarch stands facing the intruder. She remains “Defiant - non shall pass”. Glazing has begun over the Burnt Umber Imprimatura & Grisaille underpainting. The Sky is a bright “Parish Blue” fading to a bright light sky over the gently rolling hills in the background. The hills are tints of Blues, Greens, Siennas & Grays. The middle ground Savanna is of dark & light Greens, Umbers & Burnt Sienna. Portions of the middle ground & foreground Imprimatura remains untouched & needs the first pass of Glazing colors. The African Elephant is multiple tones of warm & cool Grays. The legs & feet of the Elephant are warmer tones of Gray from the dust of the Savanna soil. The Elephant too is incomplete & the first pass of glazing will be completed today.

Also on this hot day, a mostly grisaille underpainting to 'All Things Bright And Beautiful'. This will be a romantic symphonic painting on the theme of dandelions. Unusual to have a green imprimatura, but it will add an eerie glow to it.

Things I have learned since my return to oil painting after 30 years:
- colour mixing is hard, why is it so hard?
- you always need about 6 times more paint than you think
- I still have no idea how to do an imprimatura
- somehow it’s difficult to just put paint on the canvas…

Blue underpainting (imprimatura) for an impressionist/expressionist oil painting of some birch trees and foot steps, scanned in high resolution~ Posting this high resolution scan of the blue underpainting (original digital scan is 600dpi). Once oil paint is completely dry, it can be scanned on a flatbed scanner which is something I never tried before with an oil painting! The other picture posted before was a photograph and not as detailed. This version is closer to how the painting actually looks in person and has much more detail. I also wanted a high resolution scan of this version of the painting to keep forever since it will essentially disappear when I apply the first layers of oil paint. This is oil paint on wood panel. This is a Work in Progress~
