If I'd just committed the most notorious assassination in the country, I would make damned sure that my last meal before incarceration wasn't at a McDonald's.

This was four years after Epstein had pleaded guilty to (and sentenced to incarceration for) solicitation of prostitution with a minor.
NEW: Howard Lutnick, the billionaire who serves as President Trump’s commerce secretary, planned a visit to Epstein’s island in 2012.

Lutnick previously claimed that he was so revolted by Epstein that he had cut ties with him years earlier.

Most (56%) Black people in the United States live in “the South.” With all we know of the racism built into America’s justice system (“War on Drugs,” policing, prosecution, incarceration, etc), it’s no surprise a map of INCARCERATION RATES BY STATE looks like this.

Caging Black people is the point.

Abolishing prisons in a country with a mass incarceration and enslavement problem is common sense.
The GOP is acting like the most extreme DSA positions like abolishing prisons are mainstream Democratic policies when they themselves run away from the most extreme GOP positions like they’re the plague.

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed E.O. 9066, authorizing the forced relocation & incarceration of more than 125,000 Japanese Americans, solely because of their heritage.

Slavery is still legal in the United States. The only requirement is incarceration.
A grim reminder this 4th of July: The US has the highest incarceration rate of any independent democracy on Earth, making it a leader in mass incarceration.

Far too many people are locked up in the “land of the free.”

Do these imbeciles even know how to *read charts*?

This shows FIFTEEN YEARS of increased incarceration rates having ZERO EFFECT on a SKYROCKETING murder rate, followed by FIVE YEARS of the murder rate PLUMMETING with NO CHANGE in incarceration policy.

How STUPID are these assholes?

good thread below. generally I think political education around this in US politics, particularly in the era of mass incarceration, would probably help
an extremely important thing to remember about Patriarchy is that it's not just rule by men, it's rule by *fathers*. By necessity, it creates a massive surplus of extraneous "secondary" males that have to be accounted for in some way:
That's the funny thing when you look at these folks.

They *aren't* patriarchs.

They're extremely divorced, and estranged from their children.

In large part because they demanded the power without understanding the obligation.

While doing some research, I stumbled across this great listing of YA books on Japanese internment in WWII, which feels like good reading for today's kids, so, I'm sharing. densho.org/catalyst/you...

This math applies to incarceration more generally. When we criminalize poverty, addiction, and mental illness it means we spend more money on incarceration than it would have cost to deal with the things we criminalized.

I will beat this drum forever:

Mass incarceration intersects with EVERYTHING. If you care about LGBTQ+ rights, gender justice, reproductive rights, censorship, public safety--you care about mass incarceration whether or not you know it yet.
