Looks like the book does have a bit more nuance, covering at least some of the indentured workers, although missing the 13,000 Italians here during WWII, who became farm workers etc and stayed on for a few years after the War.

Someday, generations from now, this country will look back with shame on the barbaric practices we still use as punishments, from the morally-bankrupt death penalty to the indentured servitude exception in the 13th Amendment.
I read a couple hundred death penalty cases for a case once and I think you’d all be shocked at how often this happens. The death penalty is one of the cruelest things in our system, an obvious violation of the 8th amendment cruel and unusual punishment clause, but we just love to kill.

This is a great take considering the first waves of people were mostly Protestant exiles, paupers, widows, indentured servants, and anyone else who pretty much had no choice but to gtfo of Europe. Including my family. Long line of human garbage

Hope you’ll do a review. As well as the 1000s of pearling workers and other indentured labourers, to ignore the many many thousands here during and after WWII is a pretty serious omission. Part of the ‘anyone can do history, you don’t need training’ mentality.

And if you live somewhere where housing is expensive the wages have to be high or you aren’t hiring for shit. I had a part time job at a small family business (derogatory) and they tried to hire as close to min wage as possible since they couldn’t have indentured servants and oof.
