India's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision needs climate-resilient housing, says National Building Code chief
India’s vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047 must be backed by resilient, sustainable habitats that can withstand climate change and other emerging challenges, said V. Suresh, Chairman of the National Building Code of India. Focus on climate-resilient habitats Speaking at the 35th edition of the Beyond Square Feet lecture series organised by Asset Homes in Kochi in connection with World Habitat Day, Suresh said the focus should go beyond providing housing to creating safe, sustainable and inclusive habitats that improve people’s quality of life. He stressed the need to strengthen building standards and construction practices so buildings and urban settlements can withstand natural disasters, extreme weather events, and other climate-related risks. “Building resilience is no longer an option. It is an essential component of sustainable development,” he said, adding that climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable urbanisation must be central to India’s development journey towards 2047. He also highlighted the importance of adopting appropriate technologies, materials and planning practices to integrate sustainability and resilience into building design and construction. Despite ranking high on several development indicators, Kerala has twice the national average of people from lower-income groups living in dilapidated houses, he pointed out. Urban housing demand set to rise...

Google says AI can help Indian farmers deal with climate change better
Different tech companies are using AI in different ways. But among all the big tech companies, Google so far is the one that is pushing for AI not just in offices or for creating images and videos, but also as a technology that can transform some fundamental parts of the society, from medical sciences to farming. On Thursday Google announced some fresh initiatives that will see the company, working with some partners, explore how best AI can be used in farming to make crops more resilient to climate change. The company said it was entering into a partnership with Hyderabad-headquartered International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, and the Department of Genome Sciences at University of Washington to “accelerate the development of globally essential multi-purpose crops” that would help “farmers adapt and build resilience, especially in vulnerable dryland areas.” In particular, the initiatives will be led by Google DeepMind, the AI research arm of the company, and Google.org, the division that deals in non-profit work. To start with, Google hopes to focus research on “climate-resilient nutrient-rich crops like sorghum, also known as jowar” with an aim to build “a genetic atlas that will...

India's ethanol program has reached a point where blend percentages tell only part of the story. When E20 was built, it had a clear policy goal and that was to produce enough domestic ethanol to gradually replace gasoline. For this, India is creating a large production capacity, new agricultural relations and an investment ecosystem that looks very different from the one that started the journey.
