All of this to say: the Atmosphere has the potential to be not just a better IndieWeb, but a better web.

Hey, no pressure.

Good post from Chris.

Interestingly, he mostly treats the IndieWeb as a set of values/requirements which means the title is missing a "Than ___".

I would say that "ATProto Is A Better IndueWeb Than The (Current) Web" is an entirely correct statement.
Implicit in this piece by @paperpilot.dev is that same-origin paradigm is technically and culturally a limiting factor to how we can collectively rewild the internet. To reimagine the internet is to restructure it beyond the origin.

The Atmosphere instead uses identity as its load-bearing piece, which doesn't concentrate power in the same way. This is basically, as Chris notes, what IndieWeb has been trying (and failing) to retrofit into the web for years.

Wondered why my Goodreads import script had stopped working; turns out Amazon just disabled all Goodreads RSS feeds for no particular reason. #indieweb

Some new additions to the Smallweb Subway, a network of webrings connecting the #indieweb! Each subway line is a different topic and each station is a different website with a navigation widget to take you to the next (or previous) stop.

To be honest, I've long been very suspicious of the IndieWeb world. It has often struck me as being a form of "why do people have food insecurity or eat industrial food when you can just do subsistence agriculture in your San Francisco penthouse?" But I think that the requirements are largely sound.

I don’t think this applies to the linked post itself but a lot of the posts linked from there also remind me of why i was always a bit put off by the “IndieWeb”®™ community, in that they spent a lot of time thinking about and writing about personal websites but not a lot of time actually having one

Oh, I definitely do! And I maintain that they're all likely to make similar design decisions, have similar bugs/errors/vulnerabilities, etc. as a result. Still, I think ATProto has and will have more software diversity than the indieweb.

The internet used to be full of strange little sites nobody was trying to sell you.

They're still out there. I made a button that takes you to one. Last time it sent me to a room built out of Van Gogh paintings.
