Please join us as we continue to develop strategies in centering Indigenous Art and Design pedagogy, and in direct partnership with Indigenous knowledge keepers Trinity Poolaw & Andy Jacobs, members of the Lenni Lenapexkweyok Collective.Part public program, and part visioning workshop, we see this symposium and future offshoots as challenging the status quo, improving our support structures for our Indigenous colleagues and student body, and strengthening our own research practices in service to a wider college-wide initiative around decolonizing design. New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) marked its 25th anniversary with a vibrant celebration of creativity, cultural heritage, and emerging talent. Held in Auckland across venues like Shed 10 on Waitemata Harbour, the event showcased a mix of established designers, rising stars, and an expanded focus on Māori and Indigenous culture. Karen Walker’s takeover of the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki highlighted her iconic brand alongside collaborations with Adidas Originals and Levi’s, while Claudia Li presented a new made-to-order wedding dress collection. Jung-Ying, a Chinese-Malaysian designer, debuted fluid tailoring using upcycled fabrics, and Iti Clothes introduced genderless streetwear crafted from cotton drill. The Kahui Collective featured 16 Māori and Indigenous designers, including Shona Tāwhiao’s final runway presentation. Zambesi’s spring 2026 collection, set against Auckland Harbour views, celebrated featherlight silhouettes, while Nom*D and Beach Brains brought retro and punk-inspired styles to the forefront. The event underscored New Zealand’s growing influence in global fashion through cultural storytelling and sustainable practices.

By Raul Cortes MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexico is looking for footwear giant Adidas (OTC:ADDYY) to pony up after a Mexican-American designer, Willy Chavarria, working with the firm launched a shoe inspired by a traditional Indigenous sandal, authorities said on Friday. Chavarria, who has been hailed in the United States for his work bringing Latino issues to light - including his controversial collection touching on the alleged gang members locked up at El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison - recently dropped the "Oaxaca Slip On" shoe, a sneaker sole topped with the weave of Mexico’s huarache sandals. Critics in Mexico argued that the shoe uses the name of the southern Mexican state, a major manufacturer of the traditional leather sandals, while Chavarria’s design is manufactured in China and Indigenous artisans received no credit or benefit from the multinational firm. "Big companies often take products, ideas and designs from Indigenous communities," Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said in her morning press conference. "We are looking at the legal part to be able to support them." Deputy Culture Minister Marina Nunez confirmed that Adidas had contacted Oaxacan officials to discuss "restitution to the people who were plagiarized." The dispute is the latest by Mexico to protect its traditional designs from global fashion firms, having previously lodged complaints against Zara-owner Inditex (BME:ITX) and Louis Vuitton. Chavarria said in a statement on Saturday that he was "deeply sorry that the shoe was appropriated in this design and not developed in direct and meaningful partnership with the Oaxacan community."
