Good thread, and I will add that men DO NOT LIKE IT when women say "hey, you fucked up," and to the extent that women tend to soften the blow with indirectness, it's because men feel like their honor is insulted if they have to take feedback from women.

The racialized equivalent for me (ignoring the whole queerness and disability of it all) would be to threaten to send me back to plantation. I mention this because there's some degree of indirectness involved with that threat versus threatening to send a Jewish person to "the camps."

As I read her, the 'banality' of the banality of evil had two components. One was this openness to normal people via the indirectness of specialized intermediation & bureaucratization. The other was Eichmann's lack of judgment, which for her is a big, important, complicated thing.

Finally, indirectness & sparseness of evidence are more common across scientific fields than we think. Acknowledging this & adopting the 5 practices as scientific community (no individual can do it all!) can make theoretical development more honest & productive. 10/
and there's a sort of axis of indirectness- eg if doing wfc or generated poetry from a curated corpus, the agency is looking at fine features and using that to guide higher level curation (this still often involves a lot of low level special cases and detail oriented decision making).
