Classical Mechanics and Relativity: Lecture 14 Theoretical physicist Dr Andrew Mitchell presents an undergraduate lecture course on Classical Mechanics and Relativity at University College Dublin. This is a complete, self-contained, and standalone course in which everything is derived from scratch. This is the first lecture in the second part of the course, in which we turn to Einstein's theory of Special Relativity. In this introduction lecture, we discuss reference frames and Galilean relativity, as well as Maxwell's equations of electrodynamics, which predict the constant speed of light in all reference frames. Finally, we take a look at the famous Michelson-Morley experiment, and Lorentz's interpretation of the results. This sets the scene for Einstein's new theory, which will be developed over the coming lectures.
