proposal: we allow network TV to survive but only under federal regulations that require them to trigger a Planet Fitness "lunk" alarm any time somebody lies in an interview. the enforcement ladder for this begins at fines but ends in asset forfeiture

What makes something "literary"? Malka Older's Infomocracy is political science SF, and is thinky and well-written (and amazing). Now I've typed that, I realise that a few Ursula Le Guins fit that description too.

This aired just the once in 1998 on the live SNL show for which McKay wrote it.
It was effectively banned as it never aired again.

I wonder why.

Good to see Infomocracy there!

Woman on the Edge of Time remains one of my favorite novels.

Malka Older’s @older.bsky.social Centenal Cycle (Infomocracy, Null States, and State Tectonics) is cyberpunk for policy wonks and I absolutely loved all three books. Everything about the world Older builds is meticulously thought through and so well-plotted!

Infomocracy and Woman on the Edge on Time in the same list 😍 - a list of just five books what’s more! Definitely two of the books that orient me in the present and gave me a clear vision of where I want us to go.

"Infomocracy" involverer et globalt Internett-utfall. (Det er egentlig en spoiler, men sånn blir det.)

Doing a comfort reread of Infomocracy by @older.bsky.social and honestly an action-bureaucrat running through crowds to urgently fix misinformation is a great balm for the current environment

INFOMOCRACY by Malka Older. I love her Investigations of Mossa & Pleiti series. I know this book is good, I’m just finally far enough removed from my frustrations when working for political campaigns that I can put that aside and read it.
finished WHAT WE ARE SEEKING, just as good as everyone said! reminded me of EMBASSYTOWN and THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS (complimentary). what are you all reading?

INFOMOCRACY & the Centenal Cycle: near-ish future cyberpunky global microdemocracy political thrillers. katanas, flamethrowers, information management, chase scenes, elections!

You know, blackwork crow is generally pretty down on us humans, but is very enthusiastic when people talk about their books more so you should do that.

The #Infomocracy will not be televised, but only because there isn't enough bandwidth for that.
for me the "soft singularity" is people looking at the rapid pace of change and amount of complexity in the world, and saying they don't care/they're afraid/it doesn't matter

that is, it's a matter of cultural values rather than hard limits on understanding

and by that measure we hit it years ago

Quite often when I attend work events related to technology/ethics/trust/privacy etc I end up recommending SFF texts to various people I meet. Today it was Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz, The Water Knife by Paulo Bacigalupi, Infomocracy by Malka Older, and the short story STET by Sarah Gailey.

But if traditional media don't cover Mamdani's good government work, it reduces the chances he will get a political return on this, and so he is incentivized to move away from it. If you are a Mayor not getting coverage for good government work from old media, of course you reach out to influencers!

When I read the title, I thought "clickbait nonsense"; Then I saw what books they were talking about, and thought "No, that actually checks out, I agree with the clickbait nonsense this time" :D

You definitely should read Infomocracy and the Centenal Cycle trilogy by Malka Older

"Fans of Neuromancer will find many follow-up reads worth their time, but those that want to catch up on the cutting edge of cyberpunk should turn their eyes to Infomocracy by Malka Older." !!!!!

oh wow. Thank you so much, this is incredible to read, especially ten (10!) years after Infomocracy came out!

The best part about covering Neuromancer is that it prompted me to re-read Infomocracy by @older.bsky.social !
