In the late '80s, I ran 14 outbound telemarketers using VT100s on an AT&T 3B2 310 with 4 MB of RAM and an 80 MB hard drive running INFORMIX SQL on System V Unix. It worked great.

but it's straightforward, did what it said on the box (software came in boxes back then :-), and while there's a lot of tuning involved in bigger DBs, it basically Just Works.

i never had the pleasure of R/2 but I did start my SAP career working on both Informix and MSSQL with early R/3 and from quirky to sliders sums it up nicely, i used to write reams of informix-4gl and report writer and it was unique
