Similar strategy as S. Africa. The Apartheid regime in S. Africa sowed divisions btwn black political groups to keep control. Let the ANC & PAC kill each other. Specifically the Inkatha FP versus the ANC. This divide & rule tactic aimed to weaken collective opposition & prolong white minority rule.

The reason you are ignorant about what the ANC did, is that the majority of the violence in SA was black on black violence - Apartheid government sponsored groups attacking ANC aligned groups, with Inkatha somewhere in the middle.

Writing something on UK policy towards Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Inkatha. Something obvious which I hadn't really thought about before is the tendency of FCO officials to make sweeping generations & comparisons of events in different African countries in a way they would never do about European ones

Interesting that white SA liberals warned British officials that Buthelezi was essentially a spent force by 1990 due to Inkatha violence, and that continuing to court him ran the risk of angering the ANC - the more likely heirs to power

While the British political establishment have often heaped praise of FW de Klerk for his role in ending apartheid, they knew fine well he attempted to marginalise the ANC in favour of Buthelezi and Inkatha
