#Innovations
technology iterates upon its prior innovations. honestly, everything does.

Most innovations in information technology got adopted by young people first, by their own choice, then older folks get on board later, after the tech was established.

This is the first I can think of where older, more powerful people embraced a new tech innovation and had to force it on the youth.
The Daily Princetonian has published some student reactions to the announcement that the university is giving them all ChatGPT access and -- as most teachers will tell you -- none of the students actually want this garbage.

This might suggest that it needs a different frame than earlier innovations in “information technology.” Perhaps one closer to mining or textiles

New camera innovations allow visor imagery to bypass consciousness safety valves! Any desired command can be installed. You can even force the brain to emphasize production of any chemical. Very efficient dronedoll conversion. Worth all the screaming.

A new assessment by the Center for Strategic and International Studies warns the U.S. military may be too slow in duplicating battlefield innovations, losing a potential edge on a future front that will put a premium on being the quickest copycat.

From Stars and Stripes' John Vandiver:
US military risks falling behind in race to copy battlefield innovations, report warns
In Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian forces routinely copy each other’s advances quickly, leaving little time for either side to exploit an advantage.

These are in fact the innovations that keep the modern world running cheaply and on-time, yes.

Operations management really is not negotiable for something with a grocery store's margins.
At least in Europe the electricity market prices change every 15 minutes. So if you want to consume energy when it’s cheap and cool down a bit lower to let it warm up when it’s more expensive you need to change the setting up to 96 times per 24h

It is extremely funny that the two big tech innovations of the last decade, specifically in this sequence, are “digital currency that lets you store and move money untraceably on a computer,” and then, “ultra-adept hacking robots that can crack any computer”

I worry about this, all the time.

University research is the economic engine that powers our future. Every dollar spent in academic research fuels innovations, industries, businesses.

If an adversary wanted to undo America’s prosperity, this is the starting point.

Throughout the history of capitalism, technical innovations have always been touted as the end of work, and they always end up making people work more and longer and harder. Capitalism is not a system for getting things done efficiently. It is a system for making profit, and profit is surplus work.
No Ronald, you credulous dipshit, THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN.

I despair.

YOU ARE BEING HAD BY SHINY, FASCIST MAGIC BEANS, YOU STUPID MAN. Read a fucking book.

It's really the polar opposite of the 1990s. Back then, tech was exciting and useful, and it generally worked. Today there's a largely correct perception that *all* new tech innovations and companies are there to scam or harm you in some way. They've squandered every last drop of goodwill.
The kids hating AI and the gen pop hating data centers, I can promise you that this literally never happened when Silicon Valley was making big leaps and bounds in the 90s tech scene. Email worked. Search worked. Message boards worked. It wasn't some nebulous snake oil looking for a purpose.
"Do you think that the construction of new data centers is..."

A surprising amount of the US economy is rooted in public goods and innovations being handed over to capitalists so they could make a profit off of it
when artists said this in 2022 they were laughing at us, so 🤷‍♀️

(but realtalk, I'm glad more people are waking up to it now)

Agreed. Tesla's scientific achievements deserve recognition, but they shouldn't shield his eugenic beliefs from scrutiny any more than Henry Ford's automotive innovations should shield his antisemitism and promotion of Nazi ideology. Historical contributions do not erase historical accountability.

Then I recall Trump’s cuts to science and research.
