three parachutes, in formation, patterned in red & white. screencap from the moving images taken by remote-controlled camera aboard the Artemis I mission unmanned Orion capsule, a view taken through the window of the spacecraft looking up to the heavens, showing the three main parachutes deployed (with tethers visible) to slow the capsule's descent, moments before splashdown. The scene was re-enacted by the Artemis II mission, with humans aboard. Artemis I&II in turn re-enacted the scenes familiar to a previous generation, with the Apollo mission splashdowns (Earth landings) looking exactly the same, some 50+ years ago (1968-1972). Artemis II is therefore a (mere) repitition of a cultural achevement from the previous century, nothing new. background reading/viewing; "Video of Orion's skip reentry on Artemis 1, showing the entire reentry process unedited from space to splashdown" (via Wikipedia entry for 'atmospheric reentry') https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_entry

An #instapoetrygram written as the craft was still outbound, and looked to be another piece of #spacejunk (The de-orbiting option came later.)

From the news coverage available on that day, and the graphic provided by Space.com, it looked like the spacecraft had been flung into space uncontrollably. In point of fact, it had its own on-board propellant, and despite a leak, was able to change its trajectory. Six days into its planned journey, mission control decided to direct the Peregrine spacecraft to burn up in Earth's atmosphere to avoid the creation of space debris in a sensitive orbital space. (Wikipedia) See the previous #instapoetrygram in this series, and its accompanying graphic. Image-top, a 3-line miniature poem, dated early January 2024, with author's name above, accompanied by image-below, an illustration from a news story, also from early January 2024, about an ill-fated lunar exploration journey, with a graphic showing the trajectory of the Peregrine Lander (intended as a Lunar Module), up to 'End of Mission' (labelled in the image). The trajectory describes an arabesque in space. The launch of the Vulcan Centaur spacecraft was a success (depicted in the graphic, including labels for various stages of the launch) as was the second-stage "trans-lunar injection" (TLI), but the Peregrine module failed its space maneuvers, under its own power, shortly after it began its planned 46-day journey to the moon. Image-above, a 6-line miniature poem, in two stanzas of 3 lines each, dated late December 2022, with the author's name above, accompanied by image-below, an illustration from a news story, also from late December 2022, about a robotic space exploration journey, up to 'End of Mission' (with a graphic showing an illustrator's impression of what the rover might have looked like, before its ultimate demise on Mars). The title or headline of the article also visible. This Mars lander's mission lasted 4 years, 19 days (or 1440 sols) Img-bottom-right, the logo for The Guardian (source of the news story used as inspiration). No copyright infringement intended. Fair use only. There was plenty of news coverage, in the mainstream media. cp. Stephen Colbert epitomized the story, famously, as: 'From beep...to boop.'
