#Intersubjectivity
Ah well, I disagree. I think intersubjectivity is inherent to truth telling and that makes humans (because of their subjective similarities) relatively privileged in terms of telling truth to each other. (Admittedly a controversial take.)

The empirical world is intersubjective phenomena constituted by transcendental intersubjectivity whose causality can't be objectified adequately mathematically or otherwise because it is impossible to objectify that which projects all objectivity. Hence, all math models are incomplete and transitory

there is a sad irony in that the majority of the people I know working on embodied ecological cognition do not engage in much embodied activity; and that folk working on intersubjectivity are often quite isolated

I think it’s just baseline human supremacy actually. In her 2020 paper there’s a section that insists that human intersubjectivity is how meaning is learned by human children, and machines can’t do that (because they’re not a subject). Words like “understanding” must be reserved for what humans do.

Agentic Aesthetics Puts Rhizome's Panel Series on AI Agents
Event details When Wed., Oct. 28, 2026, 6:30 to 9 p.m. ET Where New Museum Theater, New York, and a free livestream Cost $15, $10 for Rhizome members; livestream free with RSVP Get tickets _Agentic Aesthetics_ is the newest edition of Net Aesthetics, the panel series Rhizome has run since 2005 to capture where artists stand on internet culture at a given moment. It takes place at the New Museum Theater on Wednesday, with a free livestream. Rhizome's announcement opens on a line from a 1979 IBM training manual: a computer can never be held accountable, so a computer must never make a management decision. The subject is agentic AI, systems that act on their surroundings and on user input with some autonomy. Ian Cheng is the panelist closest to games. Cheng's live simulations, including the _Emissaries_ trilogy and _BOB (Bag of Beliefs)_ , are made in a game engine and run as agents that pursue their own goals without a script, so viewers watch behavior rather than a story. The second session pairs Cheng with Lynn Hershman Leeson, whose chatbot and avatar works go back to the 1990s, the artist and machine-learning educator Gene Kogan, and Franco Mattes, half of Eva and Franco Mattes, whose cursed cat image now breeds inside AI training data. Rhizome's Michael Connor moderates. The first session launches _Intersubjectivity IV: Network Affect_ (Sternberg Press), with editors Kolja Gläser and Adina Glickstein and presentations by Bogna Konior and Dawn Chan. The last edition, _Neural Net Aesthetics_ , ran in 2023. Killscreen follows the artists who treat simulations and agents as a medium, not a product. The free Radar newsletter finds the next one for you, three times a week. Get the free Radar

🎶I don't exist when you don't see me🎶

Intersubjectivity upsets everyone who trips over it, it's democratic like that.

interesting rev by Schmid of a collection edited by Szanto and Moran. note the piece by O'Madagain on Davidson & Husserl re intersubjectivity! i happened to re-read some DD lately and was again struck by how Husserlian he is in places like "The Myth of Subjectivity."

Music & film have often been studied separately, despite both being powerful emotional media. Here we explore how embodied cognition connects musicology, film studies & neuroscience: how sound and movement work together to shape our emotional experiences of cinema.

Yeah, I'm more of a scaling continuum of capacity for reasoning and reactive emotion* sort. Souls just ...have never made sense to me.

* As we're painfully aware, intersubjectivity in humans is as variable as any other trait or capacity

have to attach to myriad objects, including abstractions. Chimps and gorillas seem to attach to a concept of “community“ but humans attach themselves to rules and authority across the ethnological record. Add the capacity to externalize attachments and develop intersubjectivity, & boom, institutions

Relational intersubjectivity can replace atomism without replacing agency. Individuals are not origins without histories. They are places where histories become acts.

Which of course highlights the question of who draws the diagram.

Relational intersubjectivity is beautiful, and I think it’s a more powerful model than what we’ve got, but it is not a panacea, and it has one very obvious weak spot.

Actions are performed through individuals qua individuals.

The crisis in tech is ultimately a crisis of intersubjectivity. I'll bang this drum forever but I consider AI tech of this sort as arising from the historical logics underpinning social media, attention economy, influencing, etc down the line instead of some new, bespoke thing all its own.
