#Inuktitut
The common Anglicization is Malaya, which is actually how one of my cousins spells it, Malaija is how it is properly spelled in Inuktitut.

I have followed Ancient Americas for several years now, and it is one of the nicest channels covering the cultures and anthropology of the Americas. He’s probably found help at this point, but if anyone was interested helping him correctly pronounce Inuktitut […]

“Canada’s Arctic sovereignty depends on our ability to be present, to operate, and to respond.” — Defence Minister David McGuinty

Our Inuktitut-named icebreakers will be unassailable assertions of Canadian sovereignty. In true Canadian style, a polite but very firm “back off.”

Excellent read.

8/8 Naming the new icebreakers in Inuktitut sends a powerful message.

It is an unassailable assertion of sovereignty, backed by international law and Indigenous rights.

A polite but very firm "back off."

My Inuktitut is super rudimentary, but I’m still working on it. And Inuit are NOT PREPARED to hear a white guy speaking their language.

Today, the food class at my school made suvalik, a traditional dish. They came to the door with plates of it on a cart. I said, in what I’m pretty sure was solid Inuktitut: “What is this? Is this suvalik? Thank you.”

The girl pushing the cart: jaw dropped. “What. The. Fuck.” 😁

A Northwest Passage cruise reveals a winter wonderland but it's the residents I won't forget
I’m sitting in a large room that reminds me of my high-school gym, except the wall is adorned with cork in the shape of a large inuksuk and there are tables crowded with people playing a distracted game of bingo. It’s a Thursday afternoon in late August, but many of us are wearing layers of wool, waterproof pants and thick socks. Between calls of “B-11″ and “N-38,” we speak to our hosts, members of the Inuit community of Gjoa Haven (Uqsuqtuuq in Inuktitut) who gamely respond to every question we ask, even the personal ones. One of the two Inuit women at my table speaks with pride about her son, who is days away from leaving to attend the University of Calgary. I hear about the town of about 1,500 people, the only community on the remote, massive King William Island in Nunavut, its traditions of hunting and fishing and how kids have to travel south to get a postsecondary education. Bingo is a regular community event and they are happy to include people like me, passengers on Arctic cruises who pay to take part and have the opportunity to speak for a couple of hours to real people about...

How many "how many" does your language distinguish?

Mandarin shū = book or books (1, unmarked)
English book/books (2)
Slovene knjiga / knjigi / knjige (3, with dual)
Larike pronouns distinguish "we two", "we three", "we many" (4 with trial)
Bayso separates "a few" from "many" (paucal)

Growing up here I heard the subdivision of Apex (in English)/ Niaqunnguuq (Inuktitut) was for Inuit and you needed a work permit to go 'into town', which was a US air force base at the time (~1940), but I havent seen when this restriction was lifted.

En langues autochtones, le mot « ours » se traduit différemment selon la nation :

• Micmac : Muin (ours noir)
• Atikamekw : Masko
• Cri : Maskwa
• Inuktitut : Nanoq (ou Nanuq pour l'ours blanc)
• Cherokee : Yona
• Miwok : Honaw (ou Honon )
