Sure it wasn’t Inupiaq? It’s easy enough to not know what the heck our governor is trying to say sometimes …

For the 6th day of the #WeekWithoutDriving I decided to look around and find signs that have Inupiaq words. I think it's cool that we get to see our language on the signage around Kotzebue.

Spent a bit too much time on the Knik river, Alaska, USA.
Amazing fans alongside an amazing river. The term 'knik' derives from the Iñupiaq word 'igniq' ('fire'). Apt.

The remains of an Iñupiaq student who died in 1900 while attending Carlisle Indian Industrial School have now returned to her home.

Tummassak, a 12-year-old student at Carlisle, died three years after being taken to the school, which she attended from 1897 until her death from tuberculosis.

The person I knew back in Seattle who did the most talking and opining about salmon (on our university bbs) was Inupiaq from Alaska. It was super-informative.

The word for poetry in Inupiaq is the same as the word to breathe, and both derive from anerca, the soul.

Does math count? I really love the idea of not using our base 10 (0-9) system, but something that makes as much of math as easy and intuitive as possible, like how Kaktovik Iñupiaq numerals do for the shape of the numbers and some aspects of division. [1/2]

I was born and raised in Alaska, & come from Inupiaq, Yup'ik, & Athabascan tribes.

My living grandparents who had their languages tortured out of them.

This hot metal cage thing is one thing the Christian missionaries used to punish Alaska Native children and adults. Metal shed under the sun.
NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards.

The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵

Science-y Saturda-y//

Our favourite highly accurate anti-fact correction uttered by a nonexistent person:

"Lisa! Vampires are make believe, just like elves and gremlins and eskimos!" -- Homer Simpson

And he was right. They're really Inuit, Yupik or Kalaallit.

Inuit or Eskimo: Which name to use? | Alaska Native Language Center
Although the name "Eskimo" was commonly used in Alaska to refer to Inuit and Yupik people of the world, this usage is now considered unacceptable by many or even most Alaska Natives, largely since it is a colonial name imposed by non-Indigenous people. Alaska Natives increasingly prefer to be known by the names they use in their own languages, such as Inupiaq or Yupik. "Inuit" is now the current term in Alaska and across the Arctic, and "Eskimo" is fading from use. The Inuit Circumpolar Council prefers the term "Inuit" but some other organizations use "Eskimo".
