Welcome to In the Groove, a brand-new YouTube series from Jazz Ireland, where we bring you closer to the artists shaping the vibrant Irish jazz scene. A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to sit down with Izumi Kimura in the Jazz and Contemporary Music Department at DCU. We’d like to thank Izumi for taking the time to chat with us and for speaking so candidly about her life. During the interview, Izumi spoke about her introduction to music, her move from Japan to Ireland, being immersed in the Dublin jazz community—despite not considering herself a jazz musician—her approach to improvisation and composition, the symbolism in her music, and her upcoming album releases. Izumi is releasing multiple albums this year, including Butterfly Effect, which is currently available on Bandcamp and other streaming platforms, and Glacial Voyage (a collaborative album with Swiss guitarist Christy Doran). https://izumikimura.bandcamp.com/album/butterfly-effect Check out Izumi’s website for more information about her albums and upcoming tour: https://izumikimura.com/ Stay tuned for more episodes as In the Groove explores the stories, artistry, and passion behind Ireland’s thriving jazz community. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to keep up with all the latest from Jazz Ireland! Credits: Interview and production by Hayley Kavanagh and Eric Doyle on behalf of Jazz Ireland.
