Yup, it's time to visit Oberhausen's Gasometer - 117m of industrial engineering, built to store the gas from coking and ironmaking and after decommissioning in 1988 converted to one of Europe's most unusual exhibition spaces.

Alternative paths to decarbonising global steel would appear no less daunting, as I write in the latest edition of The Kelvin Report. Another route explored in the study relies on electricity-based steelmaking via electrolytic ironmaking (EW-EAF).

...from blast furnace gas produced during ironmaking. That might sound like a lot, but let’s compare that with the scale of the Shougang’s Jintang Iron and Steelworks.

The mega-facility has the capacity to produce more than 13 million tonnes of iron and steel each year.

Such a required shift in strategy must involve careful consideration of supply security and the workers to be affected by changes in ironmaking.

This is why hydrogen policy needs a sectoral approach – from the decisions on technologies used in a plant to the products traded across borders.

Tatara furnaces were used in traditional Japanese ironmaking to smelt iron sand into steel. In medieval Japan, this was cutting-edge technology; powerful, transformative, and resource-hungry.

I'm watching this video about traditional Irish ironmaking and there's this one "cis" man in it with beautiful long hair and I want to do horrible things to him in a Conex box until she's convinced she doesn't want to be called "he" ever again and any time she sees a shipping container, she wraps...

Electra is very cool as well, but I think they really need to leverage the multiple value streams angle. Iron is just too damn cheap.

Green iron trade can help steelmakers move away from coal-based ironmaking. Partnerships are a step towards that goal.

Swipe to meet the partners and see what each brings to the match!

📊 This chart compares cost pathways for hydrogen-based and alternative technologies in fertilizer, steel, shipping and aviation. It shows how plasma nitrogen fixation, electrochemical ironmaking, and battery or nuclear shipping could approach cost parity with fossil-based routes.

🏭 Steel

Iron and steel are essential to modern life. Yet they account for up to 9% of global emissions.

We focus on the innovations needed to change that, including electric steelmaking and optimizing the use of post-consumer scrap.

Yeah I mean just judging by the Wikipedia page it seems like advances in ironmaking may have provided the "sea peoples" and other migratory-invader groups with a competitive military strategy vs smaller bronze-age armies but that seems to be a secondary cause next to "huge drought"

On Tuesday 9/22, geology specialist Mike Di Maio will discuss the history of Mount Hope Mine, which operated from 1710 until 1978. He will review how iron ore formed here and was extracted for ironmaking. This event will take place in the Library's lower level Meeting Room at 7pm.
