My uncle was a ferryman for a few years, on the Irwell. He had to row, but passengers were few and far between, so he spent a lot of the day painting pictures.

On the days when I work from home, I walk my dog beside this river before I head home andlog on. I can’t think that this is worse for my mental health than sitting in crawling traffic for an hour then hoping I’ll choke to death on a meal deal so I won’t have to do it again on the way home.

This week in 1642 a rainy Manchester, supporting Parliament in the English Civil War, defended an attack by Royalist forces. Royalist Captain Standish, emerging from a house across the Irwell, was killed by a shot from @mancathedral.bsky.social tower, where the sniper had kept his (gun)powder dry.

Nostalgic morning around the Kersal area of Salford. Lived here 40+ years ago. All signs of our accommodation and pubs gone but the green space and River Irwell much improved. Some very enjoyable city birding. 46sp in little over an hour & a half. ebird.org/checklist/S3...

It’s normally reserved for their overseas but surely crossing the Irwell counts.

We are working in partnership with Irwell Valley Homes to build a vital new social rent, extra care scheme in Higher Blackley for those with Dementia for 16 local residents.

A time capsule with messages from the community was placed in the ground recently as the project progresses now on site.🏡

It's a gorgeous September day in (Greater) Manchester, and the active travel folk are flocking to the Irwell for Making Active Places 2026.

If you see an owl today, do say hello!

The extension to Victoria did span the Irwell so that part of the station was in Manchester. Trains to and from Victoria could, and did, bypass Exchange.

Where was Exchange in Salford? I assume it spanned the Irwell?

Think of it as having the garden watered without having to do any work, or Him upstairs topping up the River Irwell 😁

There used to be us, Kersal, Broughton & Irwell Valley high schools within about a mile & half of each other. Also two catholic high schools in the same area
