Photos shared by the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo show the motionless animals floating along the Ishasha River. Park officials say they first started appearing last week. The exact cause of the poisoning is unknown

At least 50 hippos and other large animals have been killed by anthrax poisoning in Africa's oldest national park, its director has said.

Autoridades suspeitam de contaminação na água; local, que já perdeu 95% dos hipopótamos em 20 anos, teme novo colapso populacional Cerca de cinquenta hipopótamos e outros animais de grande porte foram encontrados mortos no Parque Nacional Virunga, localizado no leste da República Democrática do Congo. Os corpos foram avistados flutuando no Rio Ishasha, conforme relatou o diretor do parque, Emmanuel de Merode. Testes preliminares indicam envenenamento por antraz, uma doença causada pela bactéria Bacillus anthracis, que forma esporos resistentes. A origem do surto continua sob investigação. Imagens divulgadas pelo parque mostram hipopótamos boiando inertes, alguns de lado ou de barriga para cima, enquanto outros ficaram presos na vegetação às margens do rio. Em comunicado divulgado na terça-feira, o Instituto Congolês para a Conservação da Natureza (ICCN) orientou os moradores a evitar contato com animais selvagens na região e ferver água de rios e lagos antes do consumo. De Merode explicou à Reuters que uma equipe está trabalhando para retirar os cadáveres da água e enterrá-los, mas a falta de escavadeiras e as dificuldades de acesso atrasam os trabalhos. — A logística é complicada devido ao terreno e à insegurança — afirmou. — Estamos usando cal (soda cáustica) nos enterros para evitar a propagação da doença. O Rio Ishasha deságua no Lago Edward, onde mais de 25 carcaças de hipopótamos já foram avistadas, segundo disse à Reuters Thomas Kambale, líder comunitário em Nyakakoma. Importância do Virunga O Parque Nacional Virunga é um dos ecossistemas mais biodiversos do planeta, abrigando florestas, vulcões, geleiras e uma variedade única de aves, répteis e mamíferos.
