This island is Hispaniola divided between two nations, Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east. While Haiti grapples with extreme poverty, the Dominican public boasts a thriving economy, a booming tourism sector, and a higher standard of living. To understand this contrast, we must explore their histories.
