In slightly less experimental and slow music news, the excellent Ludo Geloen will play my "hymn prelude on Veni Creator" on the fab Anneessens organ at Ieper cathedral in Belgium tomorrow - a little plainsong piece with a dusting of isorhythm... Thanks Ludo!

The 7/8 over 4/4 I can manage, but once the 6 chord phrase with the 21/16 shifts the isorhythm off I'm gone. How do drummers count three things at once?

so ..... can you make an isorhythm generator?

colour= series of notes - pitches, no rhythm
talea= a rhythmic sequence, but no pitches

the cool part - they don't have to be the same length.

The piano part in the first movement of Quartet for the End of Time is a similar length and complexity to this and while I'm not going to rely on the full written out isorhythm as a performer, it's helpful to see the patterns as a complete set for sketching purposes.

top- pick midi notes by letter/number.
bottom - choose note value, on or off
Both - set the number of steps.
Since the note-name row has 12 steps and the note on/off row has 11 steps it won't repeat for 132 steps. It's a time consuming process by hand. Of course I have no idea how to do this :)

Sounds like an intermediate step in an isorhythm that started out with the “natural” intonation…

Yogev is back on the 'shuggah. Riff #5 is the isorhythm section, and I get the fuzzies every time the band does this (God he sees in mirrors, Sum, etc).

It sounds so cool, but I will never be able to count rhythm, counter-rhythm, and melodic phrase at the same time.
