NYT, 1875.
Op-Ed from the NYT, 11/12/1875: OUR ITALIANS. Until within the last three years the Italian population of this City tas exceptionally well conducted. The number of Italiang who were brought be-fure our Police Courts was emaller, in proportion to the number of Italian residents, than the number of arrested persous belonging to any other na-tionality. The Italian colouy was made up almost exclusively of industrious and honest yeople from Genoa and the towns of the Ligurian coast, with a few emigrants frow Piedmont aud an occasional Livorneso. Three years ago, however, there arrived here a large number of immigrants from the south of Ital, or from what formerly constituted the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. These people, it was as-serted, were landed here in consequeuce of the rascality of the agents superiutending their emigration. They had intended to gu to Montevideo, but they touud thenselves landed in our severe climate, totally destitute of mones, and to a great estent of clothing. (1/2) It is to this latest aldition to our Italian population that the Italians belong who aro now so frequently guilty of crimes of vio-lence. They aro extremely ignorant, and hare been reared in the belief that brigandage is a manly occupation, aud that assas-siuation is the natural sequence of the most trivial quarrel. They are miserably poor, and it is not strange that they resort to theft and robbery. It is, perhaps, hopeless to think of civilizing them, or of keeping them in order, escept by the arm of the law. It would be unjust, however, to permit them to cast reproach upon the iudus-trious and orderly Italians of Northoru Italy. There is no evidence that these latter have in any way deteriorate siuce they came among us. The public, homerer, wheu reading of the arrest of an Italian for robbery or murder, make no discrimination, and classes all Italians together as a dau-gerous element of the population. Signor FIORAVANTE recently undertook to point out that there are two classes of Italians in this Cits, and was nearly assassinated for his pains by certain indiguant Calabrians. Nevertheless, what he said was a mere act of justice to his fellow-countrymen, and it deserves to be recorded by the press.
