Fascinating read about neurons.

Also, this knowledge feels ripe for metaphor making. #iteachenglish

Anne Carson taught me how to translate poetry in what was one of the most intriguing classes I took as an English major and poet in the creative writing subcon at U of M. I am so excited for her. She was a great teacher. #goblue #iteachenglish

Does anyone else remember how when you brought a class to the computer lab to type an essay, you had to check the keyboards to make sure the high schoolers hadn't switched the keys around on the keyboards? High school hijinks from the past!

The book is about instructional decision-making and reading comprehension: how to avoid the "re-teaching inference" trap for something more effective and research based. I'll be posting some of its ideas on LinkedIn if you'd like to follow along! #ela

If we value students, we need to value their frustrations.

If you want reading to take off, you need to know what gets in their way.

We give time to what is important.
"I don't have time for independent reading" is problematic at best.

Over and over and over again, this is what I told parents who asked me how to get their child to read more: "How often do they see YOU reading for fun?" I always kept my own pleasure reading out on my desk where students could see for that very reason, too.
If, as adults, we're not demonstrating that reading is an enjoyable and worthwhile activity, how can we expect kids to want to engage in it, too? How can they learn to love reading if it's a chore or torturous assignment fought over or rushed through to get to something else?

Get caught reading.

This is the book I am currently reading because it applies to me. School has started, and I am trying to do better. I teach middle school English for students who diidn't pass their reading SOL last year and hate reading. It's a struggle because I LOVE 🩷reading! #BookSky #EduSky #ITeachEnglish #ELA

Today was our first day back, albeit without kids.

Hits super different when two new coworkers come tell you they were in your class that you last taught 17 years ago.

Here’s to year 28: can’t wait for students next week. 🥰
