First experienced this as an undergrad doing a project at the JCSMR. Afternoon tea was an event where you could be talking with students to dept heads. I only wish I'd taken more advantage of that opportunity.

Reminds me of being an undergrad and doing a research project in immunology at JCSMR at ANU in '73. Morning and afternoon tea was common. In the afternoon you could end up sipping your tea (coffee, please) and talking to animal techs, grad students, or some of the best scientists in Australia. 🧪
Here's a reminder on #InternationalCoffeeDay: It's OK to take a (coffee) break. ☕

"It’s ... helpful to have a venue to share the day-to-day ups and downs of life as a grad student," a #PhD student wrote in this 2019 #ScienceWorkingLife. https://scim.ag/4nvLTBb

I think such an approach was far more common when I was an undergraduate in the 1970s attending daily afternoon tea at the JCSMR at ANU in Australia. I offer the emptiness of our Faculty Club as an example.

Really nice talk by Alice Cleynen, from @JCSMR, telling us about INDEGRA, a pipeline to evaluate transcriptome-wide RNA degradation in long-read sequencing. Taking into account technical degradation (in addition to biological degradation) changes DE results drastically.

Just shows you how upside down the present system of empire building is. It would be much better to fund scientists individually based on what they have done, not what they claim they can do. Then let the funded sort out the alliances. ANU JCSMR was a bit like that when I arrived in 1966.
