In my next editorial, I wanted to weigh in regarding journal impact factors (JIFs) and their abuse. JIFs were developed to aid librarians deciding which journals to subscribe to but had become widely used as a surrogate for judging individual papers and, through this, individual investigators.

In my naivete, I had hoped that these sorts of argument might push back against the (ab)use of JIFs in judging papers and, indirectly, scientists. But, over time, I could perceive no difference in the tendency of institutions to use JIFs inappropriately.
