Just compare the literacy levels from generations back. How many people acknowledged a census with a mark, or acknowledged the census-taker was spelling their name for them?

JMRL has been great about fulfilling my requests.
I don't have a good understanding of the behind-the-scenes workings of libraries, but mine keeps buying the books that I request, and my librarian friends have told me that I should keep doing that.

Currently in the very very long line to get into the JMRL book sale, which is a very heartening line to stand in

The book about this is Mariana Mazzucato’s “The Big Con: How the Consulting Industry Weakens our Businesses, Infantilizes our Governments and Warps our Economies,” published last year. JMRL has it. Recommended! I just read it a few months ago.

Another great way to help out the food banks and get a little something (or a lot of something if you’re like me 🫣) in return!

I wish I could get ebooks from UVA library but I don't think that's an option. I certainly miss my NYC library card. JMRL is nice but doesn't have nearly as much to select from.

I do this all the time and JMRL never says no.
If you want to read a book and your library doesn’t have it, it is truly a massive favor to an author to request that the library acquire it. It really and truly is

can confirm that the only time I've been rejected by the UVA Library or JMRL is when they can't find the title to buy or already own the book, and I've requested a LOT of books
HOT LIBRARY INTEL: you can ask your library to purchase specific titles for their collection, usually right through the library's website.

Librarians can't know every single new title, nor can they mind-read what their patrons might want to check out. Give it a shot!

I’ve served on an Albemarle board since 2019. I have vanishingly little spare time in life (work, kids, the usual), but the monthly meetings and light email traffic have never been a burden. Previously I served on the JMRL board—same deal. High-impact, a reasonable commitment. Recommended highly.

I also got to see the great art that is on display from our ACPS students!

And, did you know, even if you are a part-time employee of JMRL you still get benefits like health insurance and retirement?! That’s amazing. I love our library system so much.
