We had a great day peer-editing our story 1 drafts in #JOU4970! I am looking forward to my interview tomorrow morning with one of the athletic trainers to strengthen my piece.

Today in class, we peer-editied each other's first drafts. A scary and vulnerable hour and 40 minutes, but a helpful and well-appreciated class period of feedback from my classmates. There's no I in Journalism! (wait...) Okay, there's no Me in Journalism :) #jou4970

You learn something new everyday... a few weeks ago, in an interview with Economics Professor, Brandon Sheridan, I learned about The Bennett Hypothesis. This theory believes that as federal aid increases, colleges raise their tuition prices in response. New angles for my story! #JOU4970

Just a quick update!

My student loans story is underway! I have a full draft but am still working out a few things. I have some more student interviews on the way that I'm looking forward to. Happy reporting! #JOU4970

Happy #NewsEngagementDay! Take the time to read, watch, listen & share news content today! Remember, journalism is more than just the headlines - it’s often deep reporting that holds powerful institutions accountable.

Today, I’ll be working with my peers in #jou4970 as we share our first drafts 👏

I was very excited to interview a Board of Ed. member who I remember from the election ballot just 2 years ago! The interview provided valuable insights and connected stories. One teacher's classroom in particular seems to be a source of high praise - let's hope it turns into a source! #JOU4970

What a ride it's been, from making my first records request to reaching out to everyone I know in the education realm! Learning more about how students engage with history and civics in today's society has completely changed my angle for this story, and I'm looking forward to where it goes. #JOU4970

On the eve of my rough draft being due, I'm proud of the investigative work I've done so far. I had another interview with a victim today, and am glad that their voices are being heard, especially in light of the Cornell 7 case. #jou4970

after being super sick all week, finally ready to lock in for #JOU4970.... everyone manifest positivity that my interviews pull through after my illness

Scheduling more interviews and getting to that stressful mid-semester grind... lots of late nights in my future #jou4970

Per my course syllabus, this weekend is when I start writing my story for #JOU4970

Do I feel ready? No. But writing a rough draft can show me what questions still need answered, and I'm not afraid to keep working on this project after I've gotten my grade if there's more to the story

Struggling this week because of illness, but we carry on...

“Can you explain this to me like I’m 5 years old?”

For a story about the voter registration process, this question has come in handy. There are so many details and specifics, it can get a little confusing. That’s why I’m always grateful when a source breaks down these larger concepts!

As I continue to work on my story, I have begun to look into the data from the Cornell 7 stories. Connecting this to the story I am working on is both helpful for my learning on how to be a good investigator, but also helping fuel my passion on the topic of sexual assault on campuses. #jou4970

My reporting for my #JOU4970 story on Elon & Queens' merger is continuing steadily.

I've spoken with a student who went to both schools, a professor from each, and am making plans to talk to board members and administrators from both school.

It was great having @jsmithrichards.bsky.social in #JOU4970 class last week. We got to talk about her recent education investigative stories and the processes she used. She taught us so much about how to contact sources, respect privacy and ask hard questions.

Thank you for visiting us!

About a month into the semester, #JOU4970 has been a lot -- it's a senior-level course, what did I expect? But despite occasionally feeling behind, I think I can confidently say that I've learned a lot this month
Thanks to @drghislainelewis.bsky.social for making this class intense in a good way!

It’s always amazing to hear from professionals doing the work… Just a quick thank you to @jsmithrichards.bsky.social who spoke with #JOU4970 last week about her work as an investigative reporter with @propublica.org. I especially loved learning about ways to use data to find and bolster stories.

@jsmithrichards.bsky.social was gracious enough to answer some questions from me and the rest of my #JOU4970 class -- I got some really great insight about working with large volumes of FOIA documents, so thanks Jennifer! ^^

Negative: I went for an interview and he requested no voice recording so I had to take handwritten notes 🫠
Positive: I think I have a central question developed🥳
