People, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, without much theological grounding, basically thought JPII was super open and progressive because he was charismatic and BXVI was a hyper reactionary because he liked pretty liturgy, when BXVI was, all things considered, more progressive than JPII

a trad on here got mad at me for saying this but i have a strong feeling the curia genuinely was like "we need lib JPII to do for America what JPII did for Poland"
Man I am starting to think that Leão being American in that he understands the divisions and politics of the American hierarchy was a plus to the conclave mainly because Leão himself was not a part of the American hierarchy and network

It is very notable that the SSPX were initially excommunicated by JPII, who for all his many faults grew up in occupied Poland and sincerely hated Nazis, and were allowed back in by Benedict, whose relationship with the Nazi party was, shall we say, less antagonistic.

i do sort of think the curia picked Provost to be Pope for the same reason they picked JPII when communism was still at large

four popes in a row made varying degrees of attempts to bring these guys back into the fold. even JPII I think ONLY punished the bishops, presumably hoping the rest would come around. Francis didn’t like them but he let them have the sacraments of matrimony and confession as an olive branch

Francis also had to spend his tenure appointing the more liberal bishops and cardinals that could form an institutional bulwark to elect and support someone like Leo after the extremely conservative years of JPII and Benedict.

like i said, i feel like Pope Leo was the Curia's way of basically picking Lib JPII, primarily because they knew immigration and America would be flashpoints
