The irony of this, of course, is obvious; Napoleon Bonaparte began his career as an ardent Corsican nationalist who flirted with Jacobinism. But by 1810 he was firmly enmeshed in the ancien régime, married into the Hapsburgs, and unable to even imagine the beliefs that once burned in his breast.

I’m not sure if I’m alone in this but I feel like there’s been a definite trend in favor of leninism within leftist subculture(s), perhaps best understood as a broad shift towards neo-jacobinism

I suppose actually quite a lot of Scottish history of that period - both Covenant and Jacobinism - is really about the dichotomy between popular sovereignty expressed as homogenising tyranny, and absolute monarchy expressed as... relative cultural tolerance towards minorities.

Explaining to these students that "Jacobitism" and "Jacobinism" are wildly divergent political ideologies they aren't allowed to mix up is the one that makes me feel like I'm playing a nasty trick on them
The hardest word that I have to teach to students new to the 18th century is “disinterested“ — which does not mean uninterested, but that you act solely for the common good, or the good of the other person, not out of self-interest.
