“Fearlessness was fundamental in Ulmer's #music, which came firmly rooted in the #blues but could often sound heat-warped, hallucinatory and feral.” #RIP #JamesBloodUlmer #music #MusicSky #guitar #GuitarSky #jazz #JazzSky

#ripJamesBloodUlmer Glad I saw him in college after release of Freelancing (and, relatedly, not long after I saw Ronald Shannon Jackson).

“Through his fusion of #blues, #freejazz, #funk & Ornette Coleman’s #harmolodic philosophy, he developed a #guitar language that influenced generations of #musicians while earning a reputation as one of the instrument’s most original voices” www.guitarplayer.com/guitarists/d... #RIP #JamesBloodUlmer
“We had two kinds of blues: one that was forbidden, and one that wasn’t.” James “Blood” Ulmer, guitarist who redefined blues through free jazz and harmolodic theory, dies at 86
From rural South Carolina to Ornette Coleman’s circle, he built a guitar style that defied categorization and influenced generations.

ugh. Just learned James Blood Ulmer passed at 86. Looking forward to Nate Chinen's obit. In the meantime, listening to his Lps Freelancing, Black Rock, and Odyssey. Also glad I saw him live, but, regrettably, only once years ago.🎸 #Jazzsky #ripJamesBloodUlmer #JamesBloodUlmer
Dammit, RIP James Blood Ulmer. He died last week, on June 3, age 86. I'm about to get to work on an obit. Glad I got to see him live a good handful of times — most recently a hallucinatory solo show at Solar Myth a few years back.
