Emma in painted gown jaredellner and 1,995 others commented emmachamberlain i am in awe of the team that created this look with me. a project made with true love. i adore styled by @jaredellner designed by @MiguelCastroFreitas @muglerofficial dress hand painted by @AnnaDellerYee Hand painted gown on a dress form @emmachamberlain at the Met Gala - A dress as a painting, a painting as a dress @muglerofficial by @miguelcastrofreitas Met Gala debut This piece started as a question in my studio in Berlin - how can a painting truly live on a moving body, on the human form, on the female form? Through weeks of testing between Berlin and Paris, I worked to translate my painterly language directly onto fabric - something that has always been central to my practice. It dances from dense, almost sculptural impasto at the top into fluid, inky washes that dissolve down the dress, like paint slowly letting go. The work is also a quiet nod to the world of Manfred Thierry Mugler - particularly the idea of transformation and hybrid forms - as well as to Impressionist and Expressionist painting, where gesture, atmosphere, and emotion remain visible in the surface. Everything is painted by my own hands using traditional artist materials. I mixed around 30 colours, layering and reworking the surface over roughly 40 hours, then letting it dry over several days. Watching the fabric shift - from holding thick paint to absorbing water - felt like it was becoming something between a garment and a canvas. There's always a tension in my work between control and release, and this piece really holds that - between keeping the mark and allowing it to disappear. It felt very natural to bring this into Mugler's world, where the body is both structure and expression.
