#OtD 1 Nov 1936 the Jarrow marchers arrived in London. They had marched all the way from Jarrow in North-East England to protest hunger and unemployment as a result of the closure of the town's shipyard, which was the main employer in the area stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8136...

Well done to local resident, Liam Little, who completed this walk from London to Jarrow this Saturday to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Jarrow March and to fundraise for the charity, Groundwork

What a fantastic achievement and thank you for your efforts and dedication!

I missed this going out for consultation in the summer, but there is finally a scheme to upgrade NCN14 from the Tyne pedestrian and cycling tunnels though Jarrow as far as Hebburn Metro station with a link to Jarrow Metro too.
Currently it's a fairly horrid traffic sewer along an industrial area.

An often forgotten moment of 20th century British history - in the short term the Jarrow marchers weren’t particularly successful but their legacy has endured.

90 years ago, Britain witnessed the Jarrow Crusade, the Abdication crisis and Cable St. All in about six weeks.

The country was in trouble, and it still marginalised fascists. Plus ça change.
This guy is a absolute thunder****

The year after the Jarrow Crusade. Workers on the scrapheap of orthodox economic policies, such poor thinking as we approached World War ll.

Aww man! Tyneside is our twin city, and I grew up right across a road called “Jarrow Way”. I wish these acted teleportation devices and I could be there!

First the Labour Party neglected the protesters. Then it lionised them. Then it forgot them.

As the 90th anniversary commemorations of the Crusade come to a close, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this such a special occasion.

The Jarrow Crusade is not just a story from our past. It is part of who we are, and its message remains as important today as ever.

Students at schools in Jarrow and Gateshead East are better equipped to thrive in their education through Magic Breakfast's Free Breakfast Club programme.

I support their calls to expand this provision to secondary school pupils and ensure that food is inclusive of dietary needs and neurodiversity

Scottie Press, January 1972: "Inevitably one's mind goes back to the bad old days of the 30s...is it to happen again? Will it be the Mersey Marchers instead of the Jarrow Marchers? The answer must be an emphatic No! No! No!"

Although the Jarrow movement did not achieve an immediate motion for legislative response, the Crusade is a testament to the town’s enduring legacy of fighting for social justice and the right to work.
