At least six people have died and more than 120 remain missing after the passenger vessel Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea, Indonesian authorities said.

Rescuers in Indonesia reported that at least six people were killed and 130 others were missing following the capsizing of the Virgo Transport 8 ferry in the Java Sea. The ferry, which was traveling between Java and Borneo, lost contact with its shipping company early on Sunday after departing from Surabaya in East Java. The vessel carried 243 passengers and crew, with 213 passengers and 30 crew members on board. Basarnas, Indonesia's national search and rescue agency, confirmed the casualties and stated that 107 people had been rescued. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi explained that the ship had capsized but had not sunk, based on helicopter surveillance. The captain had reported the vessel was 'tilting' before losing contact. Rescuers faced waves up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) while attempting to reach the ferry. The last known position of the vessel was detected in the Java Sea, approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) from its destination. The Banjarmasin Sea Port Authority head, Heri Purwanto, emphasized the priority of passenger safety and the coordination of rescue operations. Relatives of passengers gathered at the Banjarmasin port, checking a whiteboard for updates on the rescued individuals.
