The Pop Art themes of celebrity, mass media and entertainment continues in the Neo-Pop compositions of the American Jeff Koons. His series of massively huge “Easyfun-Ethereal” paintings are mash-ups of advertising clips, subtle (and not-so-subtle) sex appeal and garishly bright colors that have direct antecedents in the art of James Rosenquist. Koons tends to blend high-brow and low-brow visuals with tongue-in-cheek humor that thumbs its nose at what is usually considered acceptable. In “Lips”, Koons features glossy, disembodied, lipsticked lips with floating corn kernels and citrus slices, one eye with abnormally long eyelashes and swirling blonde tresses against a verdant landscape background. The collage-like composition is a slick oil painting in photo-realist style, with computer-scanned images serving as source material. Koons is the master of merging the organic with the artificial. Like Andy Warhol, he employs a vast workshop with teams of assistants who make his work for him.
