Bombardier's JetTrain was meant to bring high-speed rail to North America.
It had a diesel engine for onboard electrical power and slow speeds up to 50 km/h, but could fire up a 3.75 MW PW150 gas turbine to reach 265 km/h, providing both low-end efficiency and high-end speed.

Bombardier's JetTrain was meant to bring high-speed rail to North America.

When the Acela program began, Bombardier was proposing a gas-turbine engine-ed 'JetTrain' because most of North America has no electric train infrastructure.
Metra has announced that it will begin high speed operations between Chicago and Aurora, Illinois. 20 Acela trainsets will be acquired from Amtrak for this service. It will be the first high speed rail line built in the midwestern United States.

I love the backrgound of this thing, how it's basically a combustion Acela. The original American Flyers are derived from TGV's, sorta like the Avelia Liberties but less directly. The JetTrain is a bit of a callback to the TGV Sud-Est, as the prototype was gas-powered!

Yeah, JetTrain was the rabbit hole that led me to the Aérotrain! I guess lightweight turbojet trains would make some kind of sense in the Corridor. But we should get on with upgrading the right-of-way so electric HSR can operate.

Do find it interesting though how close this lines up with the current connectUS plan though, perhaps in a different life the JetTrain is the Airo 25 years before it
