Mohamed Soliman, an Egyptian national residing illegally in the United States, has pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes and other charges following a firebombing attack on a Jewish demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, in June 2025. The attack, which occurred during a weekly protest organized by the group 'Run for Their Lives' in support of hostages taken in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, resulted in the death of 82-year-old Karen Diamond and injuries to twelve others. Soliman, who had been living in Colorado Springs with his wife and five children, used a makeshift flamethrower and threw two Molotov cocktails at the demonstration, causing severe burns to Diamond and others. Federal prosecutors stated that Soliman targeted the group because they were Jewish, and he had planned the attack for a year, having entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2022 that expired the following year. He later filed for asylum but was granted only temporary work authorization that also expired. Soliman, who was already serving a life sentence for state charges related to the attack, admitted to the federal court that he sought 'to kill all Zionist people,' referencing the movement to establish and protect a Jewish state in Israel. During the plea hearing, Soliman spoke through an interpreter, providing minimal responses, and was led out of court in handcuffs without acknowledging the victims. The federal charges include nine counts of hate crimes, two counts of using fire or explosives to commit a felony, and one count of carrying an explosive while committing a felony, all punishable by life imprisonment. Prosecutors noted that Soliman had brought 18 Molotov cocktails to the demonstration but only used two, and that he had attempted twice to purchase a gun but was denied. The attack left 13 people physically injured, with prosecutors considering 16 others as victims due to the potential for harm. Soliman's sentencing is scheduled for January 7, 2026, with the judge indicating he would review sentencing guidelines before making a decision. The Boulder community, particularly the Jewish population, has been deeply affected by the incident, which took place in a pedestrian mall area known for its shops and restaurants. Soliman's wife divorced him in April 2025, and he recently dropped his opposition to removing his family from the U.S. The case highlights ongoing tensions related to the Israel-Hamas conflict and its impact on communities in the United States.
