I was sceptical that there would be much difference between bridges on a Shamisen but I was very wrong. Turns out getting a proper Jiuta koma over whatever cheap thing this came with made a huge difference to the sound and playability.

my impression of the ryukyuan style so far is that the vocal lines are highly melismatic like those of mainland jiuta music, but also very sparse and unornamented, with a focus on holding long tones. they play and sing in different scales than the mainland, as well
