The week ending August 16, 1975, Johnny Wakelin & The Kinshasa Band earned US #OneHitWonder honors when their reggae-pop novelty “Black Superman (Muhammad Ali)” entered the US #Billboard #Top40 at #33. The single spent 6 weeks on the chart, peaking at #21. #JohnnyWakelin #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Legend says that British singer/songwriter Johnny Wakelin started with a tune called "Hungarian Superman," about the Hungarian-born British boxer Joe Bugner... until Bugner lost to Muhammad Ali in 1973. #JoeBugner #MuhammadAli #JohnnyWakelin #OneHitWondered

Credited to Johnny Wakelin & The Kinshasa Band, the reggae-inspired “Black Superman (Muhammad Ali)” was released on Pye Records. The single caught fire, becoming Wakelin's only US #Top40 hit. It scored bigger elsewhere, hitting #1 in Canada and #7 in the UK. #JohnnyWakelin #OneHitWondered

Johnny Wakelin continued recording for Pye, releasing “Cream Puff” and moving increasingly under his own name... The song was written by Margaret Nash and was on her husband Johnny’s 1972 I Can See Clearly Now LP. #JohnnyNash #JohnnyWakelin #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Joe Bugner’s loss made Johnny Wakelin rethink things a bit… Inspired by Ali's legendary charisma and the huge buildup to Ali’s upcoming 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" against George Foreman, Wakelin completely rewrote the song as a tribute to The Greatest. #MuhammadAli #JohnnyWakelin #OneHitWondered

Johnny Wakelin returned to the Ali well again in 1976 with "In Zaire," a driving, percussion-heavy single specifically detailing the Muhammad Ali/George Foreman Kinshasa fight. It was a big hit at home, peaking at #4 in the UK… but failed to chart in the US. #JohnnyWakelin #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Niet in de #Top2000 , zeker wel in mijn lijstje van 35.
