Updated 1 September Electrical conductivity in Múlakvísl has remained high for this time of year over the past few days. Values have ranged between 250 and 270 μS/cm since 30 August. Electrical conductivity measurements indicate the amount of geothermal water present in rivers, and high values suggest an ongoing discharge of geothermal water, similar to that observed on 19 August. The river level has not risen alongside the increased conductivity, although a rise cannot be ruled out in the coming hours. Glacial outburst floods of this magnitude are well known in Múlakvísl. This geothermal discharge is currently accompanied by significant gas pollution. The Icelandic Meteorological Office operates a gas monitor at Láguhvolar, approximately 2 km from the margin of Kötlujökull glacier. An increase in hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) was detected overnight, and concentrations are now above health protection limits. People are therefore advised not to remain near the river or its source at the glacier margin. Winds in the area are light or calm, allowing gas to accumulate in depressions in the terrain. This may pose a serious hazard to travellers in the area. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as irritation of the nose or eyes should leave the area immediately. The Icelandic Meteorological Office's 24-hour monitoring team continues to monitor measurements in the area and will issue further information if conditions change

I don’t know how every video of the Nepal disaster is more terrifying than the last. Like a non volcanic lahar or land tsunami. I guess the Icelandic phrase for it is a jökulhlaup.

Just a wrong guess: the Chinese blew up part of the glacial dam to open a small channel to allow lake levels to drop to a safer level, preventing a jøkulhlaup. Dam geometry was significantly different than estimated leading to rapid lake evacuation.

Earthquake snapped off a glacier, which apparently was holding in a glacial lake, so it came flooding down the mountain in a huge wall of water.

That could well be -- I know it's not the only site in the province where a jokulhlaup (glacial outburst flood) has been identified as a potential issue. I used to teach a natural hazards course on this region.
Another problem -- these mini-tsunamis (because of lake shapes and landslides)

What just happened in Nepal was a Glacial Lake Burst, or Jökulhlaup. We are now experiencing live what a couple of years ago was only known to me only as a "world destroyer" type spell in Magic: The Gathering.

Hij heeft (samen met anderen) de situatie ook opgelost door met een lange pijp het opgehoopte smeltwater over de ijsblokkade heen te hevelen en daarmee een jökulhlaup of te wel een GLOF = Glacial Lake Outburst Flood te voorkomen.

Floods originating from water trapped under or behind glaciers is, historically, a pretty common thing. They can get massive in scale, and be incredibly destructive. During the last ice age Glacial Lake Agassiz burst and the flood covered a decent part of North America. A lot of the geology all over North America is a direct result of that flood. Another name for such an event is "jokulhlaup". There are some theories that flood myths which pop up pretty commonly across cultures (including the Noah's flood story) may have these floods as an origin. Source: My Dad was a glaciologist specializing in these flood events.
