ALBUMS B52'S GUNS'N'ROSES Page 10-MELODY MAKER, July 25, 1987 Life IN TH THE RESURRECTION JONKLEIN BEFORE.. ROUND about 1980, I fell out of a fourth floor window and broke my back. Bit of a riotous party. When you damage your body, you can't really rough it and sleep on bedsit floors so I picked up a grant and went to college-something much less strenuous. Then I played guitar with Specimen and also did the sleeves and the promo side of things with the record company. I vaguely knew Steve from the Batcave days, which I quit over two years ago, really not interested in playing anymore. I really couldn't handle the insanity of the way most people run bands so I just sunk myself into writing for a couple of years, did some painting, some production jobs I managed to blag, quite an academic time. BANSHEES GUITARISTS I'M number five. I feel a bit like the drummer in "Spinal Tap", about to combust any second. No, seriously, I've not taken this job as a career move, I've taken it as a chance to play with people who've stayed alive long enough, through a lot of common sense, to suggest to me they know what they're talking about. Sioux knows what she wants and she makes sure she gets it. FILMS I'VE got really BAD taste in films "Labyrinth" was: brilliant-David Bowie with The Muppets! Everyone else I spoke to really hated it but I like things that are really farcical and full of irony. I quite get off on people doing things that a lot of people think they shouldn't be doing. Not because it's obvious law-breaking, I just think it's funny and I love to laugh. My favourite films of all time and my biggest influence in music, consciously or otherwise, are old Walt Disney films... "Mary Poppins", "Jungle Book", "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", almost vaudeville and, because I saw them so much as a kid, because they've been hammered so hard into the back of my mind, I somehow feel naturally akin to them. VIOLENCE MY views on that have changed over the last few years. I come from a fairly strict family … SHUFFLE SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES HAVE ONCE AGAIN GARGLED WITH THE ELIXIR OF LIFE AND ARE BACK IN THE GAME. SIOUXSIE, BUDGIE AND STEVE SEVERIN HAVE NOW BEEN JOINED BY MARTIN MCCARRICK (KEYBOARDS) AND JON KLEIN (EX-GUITARIST FOR SKELETAL FAMILY). HOW DO THE NEW BOYS FIT INTO THE OLD SCHOOL? WHAT HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH RASPUTIN? HERE THEY TALK ABOUT FANTASY, FALLACY, FUN AND FROLICKS IN THEIR OWN WORDS.. STEVE SEVERIN JOHN VALENTINE CARRUTHERS IT was the same kind of disintegration that happened with McGeoch on "Dream House". He slowly faded away. KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME I HAVEN'T heard it and I've no desire to hear it really. I've seen Robert once in the last year and that was at the premier of the Orange film and he said something like "See you in August". I think we'll probably be friends till we're about 80 and then have a huge row, I've lost contact with what he's doing. FILMS THERE was a brilliant film i taped last week called "Winter Kills". I'd seen it before at the ICA. Really strange, very Kennedy-orientated. New film? "Three Amigos" - the bits where Steve Martin dances are the best. I didn't like Chevy Chase or the other guy but Steve Martin's a genius. The Singing Bush was good too. Favourite Steve Martin film? "Pennies From Heaven" because he's a real song and dance man-the amount of work he must have put into that film is really admirable. He's not just a stand-up comic. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS A REALLY clever thing to do-that will become more apparent as time goes by but we knew that when we did it. In hindsight, probably in two or three years time, it will be seen as one of our best albums. All those things about it being bold or being a cop-out will fade into insignificance. GUITARISTS WE auditioned about a dozen people but I'd known Jon for two years and I had a sneaking suspicion he'd be the person.
