@stephenjacobsmith.com will appreciate this from the Japanese on how through running promotes commercial concentration.

Probably the quote that most sticks with me from my readings in rail planning is this one, “we concluded that increasing operating performance and achieving high-speed operation would mean using electric or diesel railcars with power distributed along the cars.”

17 meters per the JRTR article about Japanese influence on the RER.

Best knowledge is from the legacy JRTR issues which were translation of the work of Japanese academics, engineers and planners.

Even more automated than that, since the 80s! Bonus points: looks and sounds as City of the Future as you'd like. www.ejrcf.or.jp/jrtr/jrtr16/....

There's a paper in JRTR that I think I cited on my blog once or twice talking about Japanese influence on the RER.

They don't cross-subsidize fares in Japan, they synergize. This is an old link but the numbers are still holding up. www.ejrcf.or.jp/jrtr/jrtr10/...

RER A and B are co-operated by the RATP and SNCF. The Japanese have a lot of that and do that by changing crews at the point where two railways meet, and provided advice and hosted French railway personnel on technical studies. But the French listened, would USA?

Look for articles on slab track in JRTR on the EJRCF site?

You mean like the flying hamburger? The speed is impressive, but I’ve read no reference to that being an influence behind Japanese high speed thinking. There was deep Japanese interest in French AC power, but Germany doesn’t even warrant a mention in Shima’s memoir.

I actually found this great write up while I was in a rabbit hole on this topic. I believe it mentions that Japanese rail freight has heavy competition with cargo transported by ship. www.ejrcf.or.jp/jrtr/jrtr26/...

According to the EJRCF, 130km/hr is imposed by a maximum 600m breaking distance for level crossings. Cape gauge lines without level crossings can exceptionally be raised to 160km/hr (like the Hokuriku Line was before the Shinkansen came ending express service). www.ejrcf.or.jp/jrtr/jrtr57/...

#JrTr Haw I tried the #Fantasian demo. The backgrounds looked like really cool diorama sets but uh... sorry to the guy who made Final Fantasy but I thought this game seemed kinda boring. It was just about a guy with amnesia who had robots teaching him to use potions. Definitely not as good as FF!
